we were very lucky to get to explore a old Wisbech Castle was a stone to motte-and-bailey castle built to fortify Wisbech (historically in the Isle of Ely Wisbech Castle was once a state prison, incarcerating Catholics in the reigns of Elizabeth, James I and Charles I and Protestants in that of Queen Mary.
King John stayed there in 1216, shortly before his death in the First Barons’ War, and Edward I visited four times during his reign.
But by the late 13th century it was primarily used to host the bishops’ law courts, and as a prison. Some of the prisoners were high status, including Elizabeth de Burgh – the wife of Robert the Bruce – and Robert Wishard, the Bishop of Glasgow, whose executions took place here.
the 1600s the castle fell into ruin, in the late 1700s the castle was purchased and using the original material was rebuilt. Wisbech castle was owned by the same family for over 100 years.
