THE WITCHES' TREE OF OLD LOUISVILLE

This is the Witches' Tree located on the corner of 6th & Park Ave. in Old Louisville. A lot of folklore tied to this tree: It is said that witches created this tree by conjuring a demonic storm that ripped through Louisville in the 1800s, killing 100 people. Allegedly, between the lightning and the cyclone, this tree was given life. Its gnarled appearance is almost demonic, as it appears to have a twisted face on the trunk, horns at the top, and even maybe arms or skeletal wings in the back. It is certainly something Don Quixote would have loved to encounter. The tree has what Clive Barker might call "repulsive glamour." There is certainly a hideous majesty about it.

We learned of this tree by taking David Domine's Historic Old Louisville Tour. When he told us about it, we definitely had to take a look. It seems people of a spiritual nature tend to visit this tree and pay homage, respect, or to perhaps use it as a means to channel certain spirits they would like to ask for favors, as many items hang as offerings along the limbs.

Side note: During this video, I must have not been thinking when I was speaking as I mentioned that Michael in New Orleans Voodoo Lore is referred to as "Peter Blanco." I don't know why I said that. He is called Mr. Daniel Blanc. Just wanted to clear that up.
