Before Unsolved Mysteries or In Search of…there was a time when the paranormal was not a household name or a hobby that some people picked up for a long Birthday weekend. It was real, it was frightening, and it was never talked about. Imagine living during this time with spirit activity in your home. Night after night and day after day, disruptions, bangs, the phone constantly being taken off the receiver, doors opening and closing. Imagine living with that constant nuisance and anger. It would drive you mad right? Now, add in the fact that you can’t just call or email a ghost hunter to stop by and deal with it…why, because these groups did not exist. What do you do? How do you stop the chaos and mental anguish? You certainly can’t just up and move without any money and you certainly don’t receive the help from the church in a timely fashion. Do you give up? Well, our guest tonight experienced all of this and more and to top it all off, the resolution for this madness was broadcasted on NBC television in 1971 for the world to see. It was the first ever LIVE televised exorcism ever, but in this particular case, the exorcism didn’t work.
At the time, 24 year old Ed Becker purchased a home for himself and his expecting wife; a two-flat apartment building, which would allow them to live in one apartment and rent the other. What Ed didn’t know, was that there were already tenants residing in this building that he cannot evict.
Skeptical and street-smart, Ed has a difficult time coming to the realization that this apartment is home to the paranormal. As tensions begin to build between his spouse and himself, he attributes the stress to the new life style they had accumulated, as both property owners and new parents. Coupled with the efforts of working long hours and restoring a dilapidated home, Ed ignores the unusual happenings that have no viable explanation. And what happens when something that wants to be noticed goes unacknowledged? Things escalate...
Tonight, we have the honor of speaking with Edwin Becker to discuss what was the birth of paranormal television and public attention to the field regarding his families experiences, thoughts, troubles, and of course, his case of True Hauntings.
