The term “flying saucer” was coined in June of 1947 after pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine indescribable flying objects in the sky over Mt. Rainier in Washington state, kicking off a year which saw public awareness, and acceptance, of the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors become rather normal. That year saw hundreds of reported UFO sightings, which nowadays is nothing unusual, but then was a fairly surprising thing. The most famous UFO of all time landed that year, actually only a handful of days after Arnold’s account of odd flying discs. The UFO doesn’t have a name, or maybe it has too many, but its legacy is well-known to anyone who knows their history. And it is synonymous with the nearby town where it was supposedly investigated: Roswell.
