A trio of amateur crystal meth makers told North Carolina police they were ghost hunters after they were got lost in the woods on Monday, according to the Hickory Daily Record.

Reasoning that cooking crystal meth in their apartments would be too risky, amateur chemists Sonny Clay Hyatt, 39, Thomas Glenn Imler, 38, and Eric John Schmidt, 31, ventured out deep into the woods near Lenoir.

Sadly for the trio, though, their plans quickly went up in smoke. They got into an argument over their failed experiment and went their separate ways with Schmidt and Imler taking the portable meth lab with them.

Now lost and all on his own, Hyatt called 911 for help. Deputies responding to the call tracked down Hyatt using GPS coordinates from his phone.

Curious as to why Hyatt was out in the woods in the middle of the night, the officers began questioning Hyatt. He tried to convince them that he was out hunting for ghosts and looking for paranormal activity. They didn't buy his story.

"You hear every excuse imaginable," Caldwell Sheriff Alan C. Jones told the Hickory Daily Record. "These criminals would have us believe they were looking for paranormal activity in the woods at night and simply got lost. We didn't fall for that story at all."

After Hyatt fessed up, the trio was arrested and taken to the Caldwell County Detention Center. They were each placed under a $50,000 secured bond and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and the possession of methamphetamine precursor chemicals.
