HISTORY

Here are some highlights from our Paranormal Investigation at the Ye Olde Salutation Inn Caves, located in the city of Nottingham, England. Supposedly, the present building was constructed in 1240 as a workshop for a local tanner, with living accommodation in the upstairs rooms. The building is based on the site of a very old alehouse, formerly known as The Archangel Gabriel Salutes the Virgin Mary. This is where the Ye Olde Salutation Inn gets its name from. During the first part of what became known as English Civil War, both Parliamentarians and Royalists established recruiting rooms in the Inn. Following the Puritan victory, the authorities objected to the religious implications of the Inn and the Salutation was renamed to the Soldier and Citizen. This didn't last long however, as the original name was restored along with the Monarchy in 1660 and the Ye Olde Salutation Inn still stands here today in 2017.

The history of the caves go back farther in time, as an investigation by the Thoroton Excavation Society in 1937 dated the caves back to the 9th century, and concluded that they were part of an Anglo-Saxon farm, which was later used for servants' accommodation and brewing.

A fun fact, was that the Ye Olde Salutation Inn was featured [along with its respected rivals the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Inn and The Bell Inn] in an episode of Time Team's History Hunters, which aired in 1998 on Channel 4, to determine which Pub was the oldest in Nottingham.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AND GHOSTS

A 4-year old little girl dressed in Victorian clothing called Rosie, has been seen and heard at the Inn by members of staff and punters. It is said that she was a street urchin who was murdered on the site. A former landlord who unfortunately has no name, took his own life from being unable to handle the pressure of running the Pub. It is said his spirit haunts the Inn. Another former landlord who goes by the name John, is said to haunt here as he apparently poisoned himself and his family. He tends to flicker the lights down in the Inn's cellar. A ghost of a highwayman is suspected of returning back to the Inn every now and then. Lastly, a ghost of a man in medieval clothing has been spotted inside the Pub, but no one knows who he is.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION

We believe by the end of that night, we came into contact with the child spirit of Rosie, a former landlord and owner called John [possibly John Alastre] and another spirit who either died of old age or had respiratory problems.
