Formerly a rubber and pineapple plantation, Bukit Batok played a prominent role in the fall of Singapore when the British failed to defend the vicinity during the Battle of Bukit Timah and their subsequent surrender on 15 February 1942 to the Japanese at the Ford Motor Factory in present-day Hillview. At the top of Bukit Batok Nature Reserve, General Yamashita ordered 500 Australian Prisoners to construct the Japanese war memorial, Syonan Chureito shrine.
