This is a fortified snow shed while hundreds of them along the line were made out of wood in the 1980s they started making them out of concrete. In the 1800's thousands of snow shovelers, firefighters, rail walkers, inspectors etc lived in these snow sheds to keep the line clear of snow on the tracks. Some of these people never seen the light of day while other snow sheds caught on fire in the summer and were buried by avalanches in the winter. Even after the tunnels were built dangers persisted for decades as the immigrants spent most of their time hunkering down in these sheds where today very few remain.
