Belle Gunness, born as Brynhild Paulsdatter Storset on November 11, 1859, in Selbu, Norway. Belle left her Norwegian roots behind and emigrated to Chicago in 1881. Her marriage to Mads Ditlev Anton Sorenson was marked by sorrow—a burned-down candy store and the loss of two children. But Belle was no ordinary widow.
Belle preyed on men seeking love and fortune. After murdering her two husbands, she lured unsuspecting victims to her farm through enticing newspaper ads and lovelorn columns. Belle penned passionate letters promising eternal love. But when these men arrived, they met a gruesome fate—dismemberment and burial alongside other corpses on her farm.
Belle’s killing spree claimed at least 14 confirmed victims, though some estimates suggest she may have killed up to 40 people.
She profited from insurance fraud and inheritance, including a windfall from her husband Sorenson’s death in 1900.
In 1908, her farmhouse burned down, seemingly with Belle inside. But rumours persist that she slipped away, perhaps to continue her deadly pursuits. Belle’s hired hand and lover, Ray Lamphere, faced trial for arson related to the fire. Although not convicted of murder, the woman’s headless body found in the ashes remains an enigma.
