Alexander Bean was born in East Lothian during the 16th century. He lived with a woman named Black Agnes Douglas, who was accused of being a witch.
They lived undetected in a coastal cave at Bennane Head, Ayrshire, in Scotland for around 25 years. The cave was 200 yards deep and accessible only during low tide.
The couple had a large family—six daughters, eight sons, 14 granddaughters, and 18 grandsons.
The Bean clan survived by ambushing travellers at night. They would rob, murder, and dismember their victims, allegedly 1,000 of them in total. The remains were then eaten or pickled in barrels. Locals at first thought wild animals were responsible.
One night, the clan ambushed a married couple riding from a fair on a single horse. Eventually, a search party sent by King James the 6th discovered the cave. Bean and his clan were caught, tried, and executed for their heinous crimes.
