“Lost Hearts” by M. R. James is a chilling ghost story originally published in 1895.
The tale revolves around Stephen Elliott, a young orphan boy. He is invited to stay with his much older cousin, Mr. Abney, at the remote country mansion of Aswarby Hall in Lincolnshire. Mr. Abney is a reclusive scholar obsessed with magico-religious practices from late antiquity, seeking occult powers and immortality.

As Stephen settles into Aswarby Hall, he begins experiencing unsettling visions. These visions involve a young gipsy girl and a travelling Italian boy, who appear to be missing their hearts. The mystery deepens as Stephen delves into Mr. Abney’s dark interests.

Mr Abney’s scholarship spans various belief systems, including Neoplatonism, the mystery religions of late antiquity (such as Mithraism and Orphism), and the mystical system of alchemy. He even attributes a magical ritual involving the absorption of calcined hearts from three children to obtain occult powers. References to figures like Hermes Trismegistus and the biblical magician Simon Magus add to the eerie atmosphere.

In this tale of mystery and malevolence, Stephen is caught in a web of ancient secrets and forbidden knowledge, where lost hearts take on a haunting significance.
Future stories will be shared on a new separate channel, which I will provide details on shortly. The current Haunted Earth channel will be for documentaries on history, the paranormal, and a medley of `shorts`.
I hope you will subscribe there soon as I intend to regularly read and release ghost stories by classical ghost authors and my own work.
