“The Mezzotint” is a ghost story by British author M. R. James. It is part of his first collection titled “Ghost Stories of an Antiquary” (1904).
Mr. Williams, the curator of a university art museum (implied to be Oxford), receives a mysterious mezzotint from an art dealer. This engraving is deeply unsettling because it changes when Mr. Williams and his colleagues look at it. As they study the mezzotint, they discover that it depicts a vengeful poacher named Gawdy. Gawdy had been hanged for shooting a gamekeeper while poaching on the land of Mr. Arthur Francis. The eerie engraving seems to show Gawdy returning from the grave, intent on kidnapping and murdering Mr. Francis’s infant heir.

Interestingly, Gawdy’s malevolent presence persists beyond death, making this ghostly tale chilling and memorable.

Future stories will be shared on a new separate channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgj0QTRUvV09s9ANtjwc1HQ.
The current Haunted Earth channel will be for documentaries on history, the paranormal, and a medley of `shorts`.
I hope you will subscribe there soon as I intend to regularly read and release ghost stories by classical ghost authors and my own work.
