In the Greek mythology, the Gorgon Medusa was a one-of-a-kind monster, from her snake hair to her paralyzing eyes. She was transformed into such a hideous creature by Athena, even though the desecration of Athena's temple was Poseidon's fault, as he raped Medusa and left her to take the fall. While many take Medusa to be a foreboding figure, she was really a symbol of feminine power. While she looked horrible, she wasn't at one with her new body. The snakes on her head hated her, and her eyes unwillingly saw through everything, whether it was through lies or a human soul. While Athena had meant to make Medusa's punishment worse by keeping her face beautiful—since no one could look upon it for fear of being paralyzed or killed—she actually did Medusa a favor. Her female clout came with her abilities to see through anything, and her snakes were symbols of the cycles of life, due to their shedding and repairing skin. Many Greek women used her face mask as a protective shield.
