For many centuries Land's End was home to over 50 native American tribes who were nearly wiped out by the Spanish when they arrived here to settle the coastline in their galleons. During the gold rush this brought new interest in the area and on the south land mass to the San Francisco Bay a resort was built which was the original Cliff House. Adolph Sutro the man responsible for engineering the Sutro tunnel project in Virginia City took his wealth to San Francisco eventually becoming mayor and replacing the old Cliff House with a French Victorian Chateau around the same time he opened up his Sutro Baths. During its hey day the baths were the largest swimming pools in the world and the water could be recycled using high tide via a cave he built that housed a motor. Sutro also boasted an art gallery, skating rink, concert hall, cafes, museums, train system in lands end and even an amusement park. He wanted to provide the people of San Fran a way for families to enjoy history and recreation at the same time. Eventually Sutro passed away the Chateau burned down and eventually the baths became to expensive to maintain eventually shutting down. The baths became a victim of arson and all that remains today are its ruins of the past. Today however the Cliff House stands proud boasting its new neo-classic style honoring Sutro's traditions of having good food and great entertainment while enjoying beautiful views of the sea. This inlet has a reputation for not only being haunted but having a sea monster and for being responsible for sinking dozens of ships killing hundreds of men just off the shoreline where the baths are presently located. This is my first installment their will be a much more intense adventure in the future here. Today the baths are a top spot for urban explorers and those who have a deep love for Adolph Sutros amazing wonders! Some folks have thought of Lands End as possibly being cursed afterall at one time Sutro hosted a collection of odd relics including mummies here.
