Prior to 1850 most of the forested hills on lands end belong to Mexico who granted a rancher the property overlooking the ocean until California became a state. The growth of San Francisco sparked the need for a cemetery on the outskirts of town known as the Golden Gate Graveyard. But their was also a need for batteries and military fortifications to be built surrounded the port of San Francisco. Therefore Fort Miley was built which had served as a defensive military outpost during the Spanish American War, WWI and WWII. In turn the US Army had exhumed hundreds if not thousands of graves to another cemetery a few miles away supposedly until in 1993 this was found not to be so true. Therefore the dearly departed residing within their coffins are scattered within this Lands End Forest and have remained forgotten under Fort Miley for over 100 years. By the 1950's the entire fort was abandoned and its mortars were all abandoned. But the time this fort had barracks, holding cells, storehouse, parade grounds, bowling alley, tennis courts, guard house, bunkers, fuel house, hospital and so much more. It also had one of the first look out signaling stations which today is where the Octagon House stands. Let me take you on an urban exploration as I take you on an adventure through the forest to this house, remnants of the past and lastly remnants of this fortress above the ocean at nightfall. Near the end of the video is a gallery of photos with some rock n roll music for our viewers to enjoy from our first urban exploration here. The fort seen very little military action however it was one of the last remaining operable batteries of this kind to have stood on the Pacific coastline therefore it is a relevant piece of US Army history!
