The Treasurer’s House in York is a place steeped in history and, according to local lore, very haunted. Here are some of the eerie tales associated with this remarkable house:
In 1953, a plumber named Harry Martindale was working in the basement of the Treasurer’s House. As he installed a new boiler, he suddenly heard trumpet blasts. To his astonishment, he witnessed a legion of dishevelled Roman soldiers marching through the walls, complete with their horses.
Visitors and staff have reported regular sightings of a mysterious cat in the basement café area. The cat appears so lifelike that some have questioned its hygiene implications despite actually being no cat. Over the years, peculiar occurrences have baffled house staff and volunteers. Clocks simultaneously stopping, chairs moving inexplicably, cold drafts and even a firm push from an unseen force have left their mark.
In 2016, two visitors reported seeing a dog scampering through the Blue Drawing Room and the Court Room. Another visitor witnessed a black terrier dashing diagonally across the Great Hall.
On separate occasions, children have been spotted playing in the Great Hall. Two girls were seen playing marbles, while another sighting involved a boy and a girl running around the same area.
The last owner, Mr. Green, allegedly threatened to haunt the house if the furniture was moved or anything displeased him. Visitors have also reported the strong smell of cigar smoke, attributed to Mr. Green.
