17th century Ham House, situated near Richmond in Surrey, England, has a reputation as the perhaps most haunted house owned by the National Trust.

Its ghosts include Elizabeth, Duchess of Lauderdale, who was said to walk with a cane in her later years. Reports mention tapping her cane on the upper floor and, particularly, on the grand staircase.

She has been known to appear behind visitors who look into her bedchamber mirror. Documents were found hidden behind a panel indicating that the Duchess may have murdered her first husband, Sir Lionel Tollemache, to marry the 1st Duke of Lauderdale.

In 1790, a servant threw himself from a top window and was killed after being spurned by a maid, and he is seen to haunt the terrace. The Countess of Dysart, a former resident who died in 1789, was seen waving from her apartment window. And a dog has been heard on the wooden floors.
