Hedingham Castle is considered one of the best-preserved Norman keeps in Europe. The castle fortifications and outbuildings were built around 1100, and the keep around 1140.
However, the keep is the only significant medieval structure that has survived, albeit with two turrets and the remains of a long demolished forebuilding.
The castle was constructed by Aubrey de Vere I, a Norman baron. Hedingham was awarded to him by William the Conqueror.
Castle Hedingham has witnessed significant historical events. Matilda, wife of King Stephen, breathed her last here on May 3, 1152. The castle also endured two sieges, in 1216 and 1217, amidst the conflict between King John, rebel barons, and a French prince.
The castle was taken from the de Veres upon the execution of John de Vere, 12th Earl of Oxford, for treason against Edward IV in 1462. Edward then awarded Hedingham to his brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later King Richard III), who bestowed it on Henry Barley, Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire.
After the death of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, the new king, Henry VII, returned Hedingham to the de Veres in the person of Lancastrian supporter John de Vere, 13th Earl of Oxford.
By the early 18th century, the direct lineage had expired, and the castle was sold.
It was later returned in the 20th century to the ownership of paternal and maternal descendants of the Devere`s in the form of the Lindsay family, who occupies the castle to this day.
This documentary also touches on legends, ghosts and myths associated with the castle.
It is open to the public, and further information can be found on their website at: https://www.hedinghamcastle.co.uk/
