Beckwourth Cemetery was erected in 1862 shortly after James Beckwourth aka Beckwith a freed slave joined the Crow Indians and eventually improved a pass through the sierras known today as Beckwourth Pass. While this may have been the lowest elevated pass in the sierras many emigrants who came here to seek out the gold found here passed by this graveyard while along the way to start new lives for themselves. Beckwourth improved the pass which eventually became an alternative route for those who did not want to brave the snow in Donner Pass. This little haunting hillside cemetery also called Whispering Pines Graveyard sits on a hill nestled in the forest along a lonely highway in a town that is so small you can blink and miss it.
