During the winters this lake freezes over however even in the middle of May the lake is icy cold. As you can see there is also still snow on up here. This same lake the Donner Party relied on to survive. Today along the lake are many homes some of them are haunted members of the Donner Party? You decide! The Donner Party resorted to cannibalism after there wagon train could not pass through the canyon in late October in 1847 thus it doomed half of them to exposure, starvation and death. The Emigrant trail is extremely scenic full of places such as this however it also was a very deadly trail.
