Egglestone Abbey - A History

Egglestone Abbey, on the banks of the River Wear about a mile SE of Barnard Castle in County Durham is a haunted ruined Abbey

Frank Shields who described himself as a ‘recluse, antiquary and artist in painting’ while dressed in imitation of a monk’s habit, guided visitors around Barnard Castle. In 1859 he was evicted from the castle and then transferred his attentions to the ruin of nearby Egglestone Abbey, where he became increasingly obsessed with ghosts,

in 1874 he was confined in a lunatic asylum, where he died in 1881./// and then there is the legend of Brother Martin - but more on that in a later video

Egglestone Abbey remains one of my favourite places whether it be to investigate the paranormal, or just a quiet day with a packed lunch and a flask of Coffee
