Fashion is often a sign of human vanity when it goes beyond the fringe of safety. Take these crazy historic feet fashions.
Chinese Lotus shoes were, for centuries, a sign of femininity in China, and the wearer's feet were bound in a pointed shape leaving them virtually crippled. The practice is now non-existent.
Venetian Chopin was a type of women's platform overshoes popular in the 15th to the 17th centuries to protect wearers from mud and dirt. The higher ones were a sign of status and eventually were banned.
In the 1970s, they briefly returned as shoes. They soon went out of fashion when wearers were tripping over or, in one case, killed when a driver's sole was trapped in a car's accelerator.
Lastly, the Crakowes were super long pointed shoes originating in 13th-century Poland. Again, one's social status was determined by length and ranged from 6 to 24 inches, with the more extended versions being tied at the tips to prevent tripping over. They were cast from fashion by the church as `devils' fingers`.
