The greatest wartime robbery on record was of the German National Gold Reserves in Bavaria by a combination of the U.S. military cooperating with German officers, including members of the Wehrmacht and SS.
In June 1945, 730 gold bars valued at £3,528,000, together with six sacks of banknotes and 25 boxes of platinum bars and precious stones, disappeared in transit. Still, none of those responsible has ever been brought to trial.
Eventually, the U.S. recovered two gold bars, identified by Nazi-stamped markings. It announced the finding in a press release in 1997. The two bars were valued at over $1 million, but the rest remain unaccounted.
This event became the foundation story for Kelley`s Heroes, which was released in 1970 and starred Clint Eastwood.
