On September 26th, 1983, during the Cold War, the Soviet nuclear early warning system Oko reported the launch of one intercontinental ballistic missile with four more missiles behind it, all originating from the United States. These missile attack warnings were suspected to be false alarms by Stanislav Petrov, an engineer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces on duty at the command centre of the early-warning system. Instead of immediately relaying the warning up the chain of command, Petrov kept his cool and decided to wait for corroborating evidence—none arrived. His decision is now seen as having prevented a retaliatory nuclear strike against the United States and its NATO allies, which could have resulted in a full-scale nuclear war. Subsequent investigation revealed that the satellite warning system had indeed malfunctioned. Petrov received no official praise or reward, as it would have been considered an admission of failure.
This incident occurred during an era of strained relations between both superpowers. Petrov had, in fact, saved the world from destruction.
