The ghost town of Salmon Falls remains nestled along Sweetwater Creek and the American River. For thousands of years the Nisenan tribe had large villages in the beautiful ElDorado Hills. When gold was discovered in Coloma nearby in 1848 the first miners who came here were Mormons. By 1850 Salmon Falls had a stage line, hotels, saloons, boarding house, China town, stores, ranches, school, church, vineyards and later a post office. Honestly the first bridge to span the American River was built here then another one would be built in 1883 which is today the largest historical landmark found at the town site. The town once had a cemetery but when the Folsom Lake project was completed it flooded the town site obscuring it for many decades till drought exposed it rising along the banks of the river. This town had a peak of 3000 people also it is where the Natoma Ditch was dug which ran for 20 miles to provide irrigation to ranchers and placer gold to miners. A remnant of the ditch is something I will take you to go see, foundations, pillars, remnants of a dyke, walkway, cellar and of two bridges even. Its sister town of Mormon Island is not to far away when the canyons and hills were flooded to create Folsom Lake not all graves from the Salmon Falls Cemetery were moved. Today the area is full of nature but man continues to encroach an area which once had a long history of Bigfoot sightings. This was a great ghost town ill take you in the ancient forest along the creek eventually coming out at the river will ill show you some of the last remaining remnants of this very early gold rush town. We hope you enjoy it the town is once again going underwater very few may not see it for many years!
