The Evergreen Cemetery in Santa Cruz was established in 1850 after the Arcanes infant child died in Death Valley which by 1858 the land had been deeded and it became one of the first cemeteries in California to contain non-Catholics and Protestants to be buried next to one another.Many of the first pioneers who came to California when it was under Mexican Rule can be found nestled in the hills above town in a forested gulch. Rumor has it that the cemetery is haunted by a ghost of a man who was murdered who went by the name of AJ Sloan in 1865 who is often seen wearing a dark overcoat and a large brimmed hat. The cemetery has suffered years of abuse from earthquakes and vandalism especially it its forgotten years. It also is separated into Chinese, Masonic, Grand Army Of The Republic, Potters Fields, New Section and of course pioneers. I will start the video off at Santa Cruz's Natural Arches Beach where we had just got done hiking and explore. Eventually take you right through the front gates where you will see three deer grazing including a really beautiful buck who is just watching us carefully. Eventually the tour will take you into the forest and to various sections of the cemetery where nearly 2000 interments can be found. The purpose of the video is to give our viewers a brief history and show you some of the notable historical figures buried here all at the time giving all of you a walk in serenity in nature where serenity meets history.This is a very special place other then the fact that it is the oldest cemetery in Santa Cruz since California became a state in 1850.
