A very unusual story here.
Joseph Joanovici was a French scrap metal merchant who played a complex role during the occupation of Paris in the Second World War. He recognized that, as a Jew, he needed protection. He also understood that the Germans would require metal sources. He cleverly played both sides: supplying metal to the Nazi regime while secretly supporting the French Resistance.
During the four years of German occupation, Joanovici made a fortune. He sold metal to the Germans, bribed Nazi officers, and financed the Resistance. His wealth allowed him to entertain high-ranking Nazis.
He was sometimes called an "honorary Aryan".
Joanovici associated with Henri Lafont, a leader of the Carlingue, a Paris black market gang who protected him from deportation.
French intelligence, after the war, claimed it had had in its possession a German file registering him as an agent of the Gestapo.
While some view him as a shady collaborator, others recognize his efforts as a means of survival under the anti-Semitic regime.
