Renato Levi was an Italian Jew and a remarkable double agent during World War II. Having been recruited by German intelligence, he went to the Allies to offer himself as a double agent by establishing a fake spy network in Cairo and transmitting false information to the Germans, dramatically changing the war in the Allies' favour. He was known to the Germans as an imaginary agent, “Paul Nicossof”. Through ingenious manipulations by British Intelligence operatives, Levi’s fictitious informant persona retained the trust of the Germans. The Italians didn`t trust him, and from 1941 to 1943, he spent much of it locked in an Italian prison. Remarkably, the Germans never lost faith in his network. They relied on it for intelligence about the Middle East. Even when Levi was arrested and convicted, the Germans blamed the Italians for confining their key agent.
