Born on September 25, 1900, Fritz Kolbe was a German diplomat and anti-Nazi during World War II.
In 1943, an opportunity for espionage arose when Kolbe was reassigned to work as a diplomatic courier. He was entrusted with a diplomatic bag to travel to Bern in Switzerland. While there, he tried to offer mimeographed secret documents to the British embassy, which wasn`t interested, but the Americans were. By 1944, they realised they had an agent of the highest quality, though he never received payment. He was given the code name "George Wood". By the war's end, he had passed 1,600 documents to his handler in Switzerland.
He provided details of:
German expectations of the site of the D-Day landings, V-1 and V-2 programs, the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter, and Japanese plans in Southeast Asia.
He also exposed a major spy working for the Nazis at the British embassy in Ankara, codenamed `Cicero`. He survived the war, dying in Switzerland in 1971.
