Flight Lieutenant James Nicolson was on patrol near Southampton on August 16, 1940. His Hurricane came under fire from a German fighter, with four cannon shells striking his cockpit, igniting the fuel tank, and inflicting wounds to his eye, leg, and heel. As flames engulfed him and blood flowed from his injuries, he prepared to bail out. Just as he readied to parachute, he saw a Messerschmitt 110. Despite his injuries, he unleashed a barrage of fire upon the German aircraft, even as it attempted to escape. Despite the intense pain, he escaped the blazing hurricane only after delivering a final burst of fire. As he fell into the sky, deploying his parachute, he saw his injuries, observing the bones of his left hand through the knuckles. Landing in a field, he was rushed to a hospital and almost died. Weeks later, he emerged from danger, though the burns would take much longer to heal. Nicolson received the Victoria Cross from King George the 6th at Buckingham Palace for his extraordinary courage in November 1940.
