Victor Lustig, born in Hostinné, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (now part of the Czech Republic), was a highly skilled con artist who operated during the early 20th century. His criminal career spanned both Europe and the United States.
Lustig’s notoriety stems from several audacious scams:
Selling the Eiffel Tower Twice: In 1925, while in Paris, Lustig read an article about the deteriorating state of the Eiffel Tower. He saw an opportunity and decided to pose as a government official. Using forged documents, he convinced scrap metal dealers that the French government was selling the iconic landmark for scrap metal. One dealer took the bait, and Lustig disappeared with the money. When the dealer realized the scam, Lustig had already vanished. Remarkably, he attempted the same con again later!
Lustig’s repertoire included a clever con called the “Rumanian money Box”. He would approach wealthy individuals, claiming to possess a miraculous box that could duplicate any currency placed inside. Victims would hand over large sums of money to invest in this magical device, only to discover that the box was made with junk machinery.
Lustig’s charm, confidence, and ability to exploit human weaknesses made him a legendary figure in the world of con artists. His legacy lives on as one of the most eccentric personalities of his time.
