William G. Sebold, was a German native who became a U.S. citizen in 1936. During a visit to Germany, Sebold was coerced into spying on the United States for Germany. Although the Nazis threatened him, Sebold secretly reported this to the American consulate in Cologne. In February 1940, the FBI persuaded Sebold to become their first double agent. They set up a shortwave radio station on New York’s Long Island, where agents impersonating Sebold exchanged messages with the Nazis. In Manhattan, a specially rigged office allowed agents to clandestinely film Sebold meeting with German spies, including Frederick Duquesne, head of a Nazi espionage network in America. In June 1941, Sebold’s work led to the arrest of 33 people accused of spying for the Nazis. All members of the Duquesne Spy Ring were convicted that December, shortly after Germany declared war against the United States. Sebold and his wife entered a witness protection program, and he passed away in California in 1970.
