The ruins of this Tudor fortified house near Langley Park to the West of Durham was built in the early 16th century by Henry Lord Scrope. The remains of a moat and slight bank partly surround the building on three sides, whilst the east is bounded by the public footpath.

Boyle attempts a clear and interpretive description of the remains of the hall with the following:
“It was built in the sixteenth century by Henry Lord Scrope, who died in 1533. Hutchinson prints an inscription, which in his day existed over the mantelpiece of the great hall. It reads as follows:

HENRICVS SCROPE MIL
ET VXOR EIVS FILI..
XI DOMINUS DE BOLTO..
DACR ET GRAISTOKE.

Henry Scrope Knight, and wife and his son.
Eleventh lord of Bolton, Dacre and Graystoke

The Hall today is completely ruinous, the upper stories for the most part have gone and there is evidence of at least one great fire visible in the smoke blackened blocks of stone. One wall is now supported by buttresses to stop it following its neighbour and falling down
