Sarah Wilson was a woman born into poverty who worked as a menial kitchen maid for an upmarket London English family in the 1760s. She quickly learnt the airs and graces of an upper-class Lady and decided that being a peasant wasn`t the life for her.
She left her employ and purported to be Princess of Mecklenburgh, Normandy, and Countess Wilbrahammon.
With a good hard luck backup story, she deceived people nationwide until becoming a convicted convict to the then-American colony in 1767. Having been sold to William Devall (or Duvall) of Bush Creek in Maryland, she soon parted company. She went on the run, travelling through Virginia and the Carolinas, assuming the identity of Princess Sophia Carolina Augusta and claiming to be Queen Charlotte’s sister. From then until the 1776 revolution, she was treated as Royalty and lived a life of luxury. Afterwards, she joined Congregationalists in Puritan New England, where she lived out her life until 1780.
