In 1937, the Japanese Army perpetrated a hideous massacre of Chinese citizens, an event now known as `The Rape of Nanking`. The brutality was staggering: hundreds of thousands of Chinese people were subjected to murder, torture, and sexual violence as the Japanese forces ravaged the city. Amidst this horror, most Western missionaries fled Nanking, but John Rabe, a German businessman representing Siemens, chose a different path. Rabe’s unwavering commitment led him to establish the Nanking Safety Zone, a refugee haven. He generously opened his properties, foreign embassies, and Nanking University to shelter and protect the Chinese population. The Japanese respected this safe zone because Rabe officially represented Germany. This country was in the early stages of forming the Axis powers alongside Japan. Rabe’s courageous actions are estimated to have saved the lives of between 200,000 and 250,000 Chinese refugees during this dark chapter of history. His legacy is a testament to compassion and humanity in the face of unimaginable cruelty.
