Gander was a considerable-sized Newfoundland, weighing around 130 pounds. He was initially known as Pal. However, his name changed when his family gifted him to The Royal Rifles of Canada, a regiment within the Canadian Army.

Gander and his battalion were dispatched to Hong Kong in 1941 to defend against invading Japanese forces. Despite the sweltering heat, Gander valiantly repelled enemies on three occasions during the Battle of Hong Kong. Enemy troops dubbed him the “Black Beast”, as his dark fur rendered him nearly invisible during nighttime skirmishes.

Repeatedly fending off Japanese troops, he displayed unwavering courage. Shortly after midnight, an enemy grenade landed near a group of injured Canadian soldiers. Without hesitation, Gander picked up the lethal device in his mouth and sprinted away, sacrificing himself to save the lives of seven comrades.

Gander was posthumously awarded the prestigious Dickin Medal in 2000 for his bravery.
