The Heroic Mutt:
Chips, a mixed-breed dog with Husky, Collie, and German Shepherd lineage, wasn’t always a war dog. Initially a pet, he was enlisted in the military through the Dogs for Defense program after Pearl Harbor. His battlefield prowess quickly became evident. Serving in General Patton’s Seventh Army across Europe, Chips displayed unwavering courage.
In a pivotal moment, Chips charged a machine gun in a pillbox. Pvt. Rowell later said, “Then there was an awful lot of noise, and the firing stopped.” The soldiers heard someone inside the hut fire a pistol. Roswell said he then “saw one Italian soldier come out with Chips at his throat. I called him off before he could kill the man. Three others followed, holding their hands above their heads.”
Later that night, he sensed an ambush and alerted the troops, saving lives twice daily. His bravery earned him numerous medals, including a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. Sadly, they were later withdrawn as he was a service dog. Technically, he was equipment and not an enlisted soldier.
