Welcome to part 1 in a 5-part series with James and Martie Garcia at Hales Bar Dam.
Will give a brief history on the location, we will do a run through with owner Jeff Holder, will begin to explore the place on our own. We have the place to ourselves for the night. Moving apparition captured as well as some sounds, and disembodied voices.

This is the 1st episode in a 5-part series from overnight at Hales Bar Dam. There is more on the way from our time there and my channel keeps growing with explorations into the supernatural in some of the most haunted places in the US. So, make sure you subscribe.

Hales Bar Dam, built in 1913, held the distinction of being the first main-river, multipurpose dam EVER built on the Tennessee River.
Unfortunately, leaks in the dam appeared almost immediately after completion.
As Hales Bar became part of the Tennessee Valley Authority system of locks and dams, it was nothing but trouble for the agency’s engineers.

TVA’s Nickajack Dam (named after the ancient Indian town of the same name) was built in the mid 1960’s to replace the ever-leaking Hales Bar Dam. Nickajack Dam would rest on a different rock formation than the cavernous limestone foundation under Hales Bar, ensuring that the same kind of leakage would not be a problem.
Two of the Hales Bar’s generators and parts of the switchyard were installed at Nickajack.
By 1968 the 1000-foot wide spillway of Hales Bar was demolished. All that remains of Hales Bar today is the powerhouse, some of the adjoining buildings connected by tunnels.

Hales Bar Dam was built on what was once Cherokee territory. During the illegal Treaty of Sycamore Shoals on March 17, 1775 War Chief Dragging Canoe cursed the land, vowing that is was a “dark and bloody” land and would be unproductive and uninhabitable for anyone that attempted to settle there. The Cherokees also believed the water where the dam was built was sacred.

During the construction of the Hales Bar Dam there were several hundred workers who died. There were even deaths after its completion that included children. There was a dimly lit tunnel that ran underneath the dam that the kids had to pass thru each day to get to school. It is said that at least two children perished during one of the leaks in the tunnel. The narrow tunnel served as a common passage for not only the children but workers as well on a daily basis. Also, when the dam was finished the decision was made to flood the area below the dam covering an entire city including the town cemetery known as Long Cemetery.
The land underneath the water was once burial ground for many children who succumbed to a flu epidemic and died in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Today there is very little left inside the structure at Hales Bar Dam. The first two floors are under water and the Hales Bar Dam & Marina uses the turbine level as a dry boat storage area. Two of the original turbines is still in place, and a whirlpool (Native Americans call “The Suck” due to the sound it makes) is constantly created by it and the moving water over old turbine housing. There are a few big motors and fans, some storage lockers and various original equipment still in the place, although most of the turbines, generators and other equipment were sent to Nickajack Dam or scrapped at some point.

Hales Bar has a reputation for being haunted. The first popular paranormal show Ghost Hunters did an investigation there, followed by Ghost Adventures. Me and Martie did ours in 2018, which you will finally see here in a series. The show Kindred Spirits did an investigation after us. But I am behind on getting this edited together from the archives of My Haunted Diary.
The owners through most of these investigations was Jeff and Vickie Holder. You will see Jeff in this episode. I have since found out that something happened to the Holders in early 2019 where they packed their stuff, left the Hales Bar location, closed their accounts, and seemed to vanish off the grid. I hope they are okay. They were very welcoming and accommodating to me and Martie.

Location: Tennessee River in Marion County, Tennessee
