Leviathan is a sea monster referenced in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Job, Psalms, and the Book of Isaiah.
Leviathan is a primordial monster, demon of the seas, king of all beasts mentioned in the Old Testimant,. Some even say he is the Hellmouth, a monstrous animal into whose mouth the damned disappear at the last judgement. In the 1200s, St. Thomas Aquinas described Leviathan as the demon of envy, and likewise in peter binsfelds classification of demons in 1589 LEviathan is the demonic prince of hell associated with envy. In Sebastien Michaelis book, Admirable History, Leviathan was a prince of the Seraphim who tempts people to give into heresy, and is opposed by St. Peter. in The Satanic Bible (1969) Anton LaVey has Leviathan representing the element of Water and the direction of west, listing it as one of the Four Crown Princes of Hell.
Leviathan is said to rule the month of february, and to be an enormous demon of darkness and chaos, who inspires arrogance and envy. In modern times the word Leviathan has come to refer to any sea monster, and has alsot been used to describe overwhelmingly powerful peple or things. As a term for sea monster, it has also been used of great whales in particular, e.g. in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. In Modern Hebrew, the word now simply means "whale".
