Welcome to The Demon Documents. In this series I will be covering one demon per segment, and diving into their backstories and more... here is Part Three: Beelzebub. I hope you enjoy.

Beelzebub... The Lord Of The Flies. Many rank him quite high in the hierarchy of hell. Some say the kking of hell, and second to satan. He is also known as Belzebuth, and Ba'al Zebub, and according to the medieval witch hunter Peter Binsfields classification Beelzebub is considered to be one of the 7 princes of hell, and often associated with the deadly sin of gluttony. The French Inquisitor Sebastian Michalis classified Beelzebub to be associated with the deadly sin of pride. In paradise lost by john milton, he had this to say of Beelzebub. "Than whom, satan except, none higher sat."
The name derives from a philistine god who was worshipped in Ekron, and later adopted by Abrahamic religions as a named major demon. The name Beelzebub is als associated with the canaanite got Baal. Ba'al meaning Lord in hebrew. Zebub meaning Fly. There was supposedly a relationashp between the ohilitine god, and cults of flies-- refering to a view of them as pests, feasting on excrement. Alternativley the dieties actual name was Ba'al Zebul "The lord of the heavenly dwelling," and zebub was actually a derogatory pun used by israelites.
Beelzebub is said to be his most powerful in the month of July, and is said to inspire gluttony, unholy desire, jealousy, war, and murder. He is also greatly associated with demonic possesion, and some say he is one of the demons to have possessed Sister adeliene De Demandolx in the early 1600s. Some believe he has command over disease.
Ba'al Zebub is first mentioned by that name in the book of kings, as the god of a philsitne city. Even jesus was acused of being possessed by Beelzebub because of his ability to cast out demons. Beelzebub was once thought to be an extremely powerful oravle because as the lord of the flies, he would use the flies as his eyes and ears.
The Dictionnaire inferal describes beelzebub as being capable of flying, and known as the lord of the flyers or lord of the flies. Demonologists present Beelzebub in several different ways. Some say he was imposing with a wise face. Others say he is as high as a tower or of similar size to us. And some even say he has the figure of a snake with feminine traits. Palingene wrote this in Zodiaco Vitae Beelzebub as the monarch of hell, was of a prodigious size with a swollen chest & a bloated face with flashing eyes and raised eyebrows. He also gives a menacing aura & sits on a throne surrounded by fire. He is black as a Moor, with large nostrils and 2 horns on his head. He has 2 bat-like wings attached to his shoulders, 2 duck feet, a lion’s tail, and is covered from head to foot in shaggy fur.
According to the stories of 16th century occultist Johann Weyer Beelzebub led a succeesful revolt againt the devil, and is the chief lieutinan of lucifer and the emperor of hell. Similarily the 17th century excorsit Sebastien Michalies in his Admirable History placed Beelzebub among the 3 most prominent fallen angels. The other 2 being lucifer and leviathan.Yet two 1800s works identify an unholy trinity compiled of beelzebub, lucifer, and astaroth.
